Tools for reading academic papers online

Journal articles, preprints and literature reviews are long, dense and often laid out for print. FocusFlow makes the web easier to read, understand and use, so the last paper of the day is as readable as the first.

What makes papers hard to read on screen

  • Publisher pages wrap the article in navigation, metrics panels and related-content boxes.
  • Long sections with few breaks make it easy to lose your line in the middle of a methods section.
  • Moving between the abstract, results and discussion means a lot of scrolling and searching.
  • Terms from outside your field slow you down when you read across disciplines.

How FocusFlow helps you read papers

FocusFlow works on web pages, so it suits papers published as HTML, such as journal article pages and preprints with an HTML view. It does not open PDF files. Features marked PRO need FocusFlow Pro; everything else is free.

Reader Mode with a heading outline

Strip the page down to the article. A panel lists the paper's headings, so you can move from the abstract to the methods or the discussion in one click. Hide images when you only need the text.

Typography for dense text

Pick one of 8 reading fonts and open up the line height, letter spacing and word spacing. Save the setup as a profile for long reading sessions: 3 custom profiles free, unlimited with PRO.

Focus line and reading ruler

The focus line dims the page except the line under your cursor. The reading ruler marks that line with a colored band instead.

Summarize, simplify and define PRO

Get a short plain-language summary of a section, rewrite a difficult passage in simpler words, or define an unfamiliar term. Only the text you choose is sent for AI processing.

Listen to a paper

Read-aloud uses your device's built-in voices, at a speed from 0.5× to 2×. Word-by-word highlighting and the floating player are PRO.

Save and come back

Add papers to your Reading List for free. From Reader Mode, save an article as a standalone HTML page for free, or as a PDF that keeps your reading font and theme with PRO.

FocusFlow was also built for readers with dyslexia, ADHD or visual stress. The same tools help anyone who reads a lot on screen.

Free to start, Pro when you want more

Reader Mode, the 8 reading fonts, typography controls, the focus line, the reading ruler, read-aloud, the Reading List and saving as HTML are free. Pro adds the AI tools, saving as PDF, word-by-word read-aloud highlighting, unlimited profiles and settings sync.
