The modern web is filled with bright screens, auto-playing videos, low-contrast text, and a barrage of visual noise. For many, this makes reading online not just difficult, but physically uncomfortable.
Whether you experience dyslexia, ADHD, visual impairments, or simply suffer from screen fatigue, the way a website is designed shouldn't dictate your ability to read it.
That is why FocusFlow is built with a comprehensive suite of Visual Aids. We believe you should have the power to mold the web to fit your eyes, not the other way around. In this guide, we will explore all the visual accessibility tools available in FocusFlow and how you can use them to create a personalized, comfortable reading environment.
The New Accessibility Suite (v2.9.0)
With our latest update, we introduced four powerful tools designed to give you even more control over your visual experience.
1. Visual Filters
Harsh white backgrounds are a primary cause of digital eye strain. FocusFlow now allows you to apply global Visual Filters across any website.
- Contrast: Increase or decrease the page contrast (from 50% to 200%) to make text stand out more clearly or soften harsh differences.
- Saturation: Adjust the color intensity of the page (from 0% to 200%). Turn it down to 0% for a calm grayscale experience, or boost it for more vivid colors.
2. Big Cursor Mode
A standard mouse pointer can easily get lost on a large monitor or a cluttered webpage. By enabling Big Cursor Mode, your mouse pointer instantly enlarges, ensuring effortless navigation and precise clicking without the frustration of losing track of your cursor.
3. Reduce Motion Support
For individuals with vestibular disorders or ADHD, smooth scrolling, parallax effects, and flashy CSS transitions can cause dizziness or severe distraction. With a single click, Reduce Motion Support disables these animations across the web, forcing a calmer, static browsing experience.
4. Highlight Links
Skimming an article shouldn't feel like a treasure hunt. If a website's design makes it hard to distinguish hyperlinks from regular text, the Highlight Links feature boldly emphasizes all clickable elements, allowing you to navigate with confidence.
Core Visual Reading Aids
Beyond the new suite, FocusFlow has always offered essential tools to keep your eyes focused and reduce reading friction.
5. Color Overlays
Irlen Syndrome and visual stress can cause words to appear to move or blur on the page. FocusFlow's Color Overlays place a gentle, customizable color tint over the entire webpage. You can choose from various colors (like soft blue, green, or yellow) and adjust the opacity until the text feels stable and comfortable to read. In fact, FocusFlow even includes a Comfort Suggestion Button that automatically prompts you to apply an overlay if it detects harsh contrast on a site!
6. Reading Ruler
Losing your place while reading is incredibly common. The Reading Ruler acts like a physical bookmark placed under a line of text in a book. A colored, horizontal bar follows your cursor, guiding your eyes linearly across the screen and preventing you from skipping lines.
7. Focus Line (Spotlight Mode)
If the rest of the webpage is too distracting, Focus Line (or Spotlight Mode) is the ultimate solution. This feature dims the entire page except for the specific line you are currently reading. It eliminates peripheral visual noise, pulling your complete attention to the sentence at hand.
Typography and Presentation
How text is presented visually is just as important as the tools you overlay on it.
8. Dyslexia-Friendly Fonts & Typography Tuning
FocusFlow allows you to instantly swap a website's default font to accessibility-optimized typefaces like OpenDyslexic, Lexend, or Atkinson Hyperlegible. But we don't stop there. The Advanced Typography settings let you adjust font size, line height, and word spacing. You can even set Font Size Limits to ensure text is never too small or obnoxiously large, no matter how the website is coded.
9. Bionic Reading
For users with ADHD, maintaining momentum while reading can be tough. FocusFlow includes a Bionic Reading toggle that bolds the initial letters of words. This creates artificial fixation points that guide your eyes quickly through the text, boosting reading speed and comprehension.
10. Smarter Reader Mode
Sometimes, the best visual aid is removing the visuals entirely. FocusFlow's Smarter Reader Mode intelligently extracts the main article and strips away all ads, sidebars, sticky headers, and pop-ups. It leaves you with a clean, perfectly formatted page where your custom fonts and visual aids shine without interruption.
Your Web, Your Rules
FocusFlow isn't about using every single tool at once; it's about having the right tool available the moment you need it. Whether it's applying a Sepia filter for a late-night reading session, turning on the Reading Ruler for a dense PDF, or swapping the font to OpenDyslexic globally, the power is yours.
