Most "X min read" estimates you see on articles assume you read at exactly one speed. You almost certainly don't.

Reading speed varies by more than 3× across the adult population — from under 150 words per minute for many people with dyslexia to well over 400 WPM for trained speed readers. A "5 min read" badge that's accurate for an average adult becomes a 12-minute commitment for someone reading at 100 WPM, and a 3-minute skim for someone at 400 WPM. What "Words Per Minute" Actually Measures

WPM counts the number of words a reader processes per minute under normal reading conditions. The key phrase is "processes" — not just sees, but decodes well enough to continue.

This distinction matters because WPM conflates two things that are genuinely different:

  • Reading speed — how fast your eyes move across text and your brain decodes individual words
  • Comprehension speed — how fast you extract and retain meaning from that decoded text

The two are not the same. A person can increase their raw word throughput by skimming — taking in words without building a coherent understanding. That inflates WPM without improving reading performance in any meaningful sense.

The deeper cause of reading speed is subvocalization: the internal voice most people "hear" as they read silently. Subvocalization links reading rate to speech rate, which maxes out at roughly 250–300 words per minute for most adults. Readers who subvocalize heavily are naturally bounded by that ceiling. Readers who reduce subvocalization — through training or habit — can push faster, but at the cost of the inner voice that supports comprehension for many people.

The practical implication: WPM is a useful proxy for planning and estimation. It should not be optimized at the expense of understanding.


The 6 Reading Speed Benchmarks

The calculator uses six tiers derived from the published research on adult reading rates. Here's what each one means and who typically falls in it:

The 238 WPM default in the calculator is the commonly cited midpoint of the Average Adult range, drawn from reading research that aggregates across general adult populations. It's a reasonable starting point — not a prescription.

The Slow and Below Average tiers deserve particular attention. A substantial proportion of dyslexic adults read at 50–150 WPM, not because of intelligence or effort, but because phonological decoding — the process of mapping letters to sounds — requires significantly more cognitive resources for them than it does for neurotypical readers. Someone reading at 100 WPM who sees a "3 min read" badge should expect a 7-minute read. The calculator makes that visible.


What Affects Your Reading Speed

WPM is not a fixed trait. It varies based on neurological factors, the nature of the text, and how that text is presented.

Neurological factors

Dyslexia is the most significant neurological driver of below-average reading speed. Dyslexic readers process phonological information — the sound patterns underlying written words — less automatically than neurotypical readers. This means more conscious effort per word, which slows throughput. Published estimates place the dyslexic reading range at roughly 50–150 WPM, compared to 200–250 WPM for the general adult population.

ADHD affects reading speed differently. Raw decoding ability is typically intact, but attention drift — the involuntary departure from the current sentence to an unrelated thought — interrupts reading flow repeatedly. The reader returns to the page, re-reads to recover context, and loses time. This doesn't reduce peak WPM so much as it reduces sustained WPM over a session.

Text complexity and subject matter

A novel reads faster than a tax code for most people. Unfamiliar vocabulary, dense conceptual content, and technical syntax all slow comprehension — and readers unconsciously slow their pace to compensate. Studies on expert readers consistently show that domain experts read faster in their own field than in unfamiliar territory, even when the surface vocabulary is similar.

Font, line-height, and layout

Typography has a measurable effect on reading speed. Research behind fonts like Lexend and Atkinson Hyperlegible shows that increased letter spacing and optimized letterforms reduce what typographers call "visual crowding" — the perceptual blurring of adjacent characters. For readers with dyslexia or visual stress, improved typography can add 20–30 WPM of effective throughput by reducing decoding effort.

Line height, line length, and contrast ratio also matter. Very long lines (over ~80 characters) increase saccadic return errors — the mistakes readers make when jumping back to the start of the next line. Digital vs. print

Screen reading consistently measures slower than print reading in controlled studies — typically by 20–30%. The effective WPM for most adults reading long-form content on a screen is toward the lower end of their tested range.


How to Measure Your Reading Speed

The gap between 150 WPM and 400 WPM is nearly 3× on every row. For a 5,000-word report, the difference is over 20 minutes. For a novel, the difference is more than five hours. These are not rounding errors — they represent entirely different time commitments, and they underscore why a single average estimate is essentially useless for anyone outside the narrow middle of the distribution.


Reading Speed vs. Comprehension: The Tradeoff

Pushing reading speed above a natural ceiling has a cost. Just and Carpenter's influential 1987 model of reading — the eye-mind hypothesis — established that the eye does not move ahead of comprehension: fixation time on a word reflects processing time for that word. Under this model, faster reading means shorter fixation times, which means less processing time per word.

The practical consequence is a comprehension cliff around 300 WPM. Studies on comprehension retention at various reading speeds consistently show that readers who push beyond approximately 300 WPM — without systematic speed-reading training — retain meaningfully less of what they read. The words pass through. The understanding doesn't follow.

This doesn't mean reading speed is irrelevant. Improving fluency through practice — becoming more automatic at decoding familiar vocabulary — genuinely raises the speed at which comprehension can be sustained. The distinction is between efficient speed (faster decoding with full comprehension) and hollow speed (faster eye movement with degraded retention).
